Micro‐habitat drivers of saproxylic beetle assemblages in old woodlands of Mediterranean cork oak ( Quercus suber )

چکیده
Cork oak landscapes are fascinating ecosystems, historically managed for cork extraction. The persistence in this habitat of many hollow veteran trees provides suitable micro-habitats saproxylic beetles. We investigated the beetle community two isolated woodlands central Italy with different degree recovery after human transformation: (1) an open woodland and (2) a dense mixed woodland, both dominated by trees. found endemic, rare threatened beetles areas, confirming important conservation value landscapes. In we observed higher number species all trophic categories, except mycophagous specialists. Several microhabitat variables reflected stage woodlands. Our findings suggest crucial role diversified environments protected areas: even small difference (i.e., tree closeness) can affect species. Specifically, more xerophilous mesophilous woodland.

Drivers of Productivity Trends in Cork Oak Woodlands over the Last 15 Years
Higher biodiversity leads to more productive ecosystems which, in turn, supports more biodiversity. Ongoing global changes affect ecosystem productivity and, therefore, are expected to affect productivity-biodiversity relationships. However, the magnitude of these relationships may be affected by baseline biodiversity and its lifeforms. Cork oak (Quercus suber) woodlands are a highly biodiverse...
متن کاملMicroclimatic Divergence in a Mediterranean Canyon Affects Richness, Composition, and Body Size in Saproxylic Beetle Assemblages
Large valleys with opposing slopes may act as a model system with which the effects of strong climatic gradients on biodiversity can be evaluated. The advantage of such comparisons is that the impact of a change of climate can be studied on the same species pool without the need to consider regional differences. The aim of this study was to compare the assemblage of saproxylic beetles on such o...
متن کاملAdaptive Management on Sustainability of Cork Oak Woodlands
The cork oak woodland production systems result from the integration of conflicting activities in the same space creating the need of constant search of equilibrium between its components in order to achieve sustainability. In a climate change environment, associated with recent modifications in rural societies, adaptive management concepts are needed so as to maintain cork oak woodland systems...
متن کاملAssemblages of saproxylic beetles on large downed trunks of oak
Old living oaks (Quercus robur) are known as a very species-rich habitat for saproxylic beetles, but it is less clear to what extent such veteran trees differ from an even rarer feature: downed trunks of large oaks. In this study, we set out to sample this habitat, using window traps, with two aims: (1) to describe the variation of assemblages among downed trunks of different type and (2) to co...
متن کاملAssociation Patterns in Saproxylic Insect Networks in Three Iberian Mediterranean Woodlands and Their Resistance to Microhabitat Loss
The assessment of the relationship between species diversity, species interactions and environmental characteristics is indispensable for understanding network architecture and ecological distribution in complex networks. Saproxylic insect communities inhabiting tree hollow microhabitats within Mediterranean woodlands are highly dependent on woodland configuration and on microhabitat supply the...
