چکیده
Antibacterial Strategies An innovative nanozyme-armed phage (phage@Pd) system is fabricated for combating bacterial infection, as reported by Zhengwei Mao and co-workers in article number 2301349. The phage@Pd preserves the function of phages to achieve precise recognition adhesion bacteria. ultrasmall palladium (Pd) nanozymes equipped with conspicuous pH-dependent peroxidase (POD)-like activity can generate toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) around bacteria infection microenvironment, thus selectively realizing elimination

Metamaterials: Snapping Mechanical Metamaterials under Tension (Adv. Mater. 39/2015).
By exploiting snap-through instabilities, D. Pasini and co-workers design a damage-tolerant mechanical metamaterial that snaps sequentially under tension, thereby accommodating a very large deformation up to 150%. On page 5931, they describe how the nonlinear mechanical response of the metamaterial can be robustly programmed by tuning the architecture of its unit cell.
متن کاملBacterial ‘immunity’ against bacteriophages
Vertebrate animals possess multiple anti-pathogen defenses. Individual mechanisms usually are differentiated into those that are immunologically adaptive vs. more "primitive" anti-pathogen phenomena described as innate responses. Here I frame defenses used by bacteria against bacteriophages as analogous to these animal immune functions. Included are numerous anti-phage defenses in addition to t...
متن کاملBacteriophages and Bacterial Plant Diseases
Losses in crop yields due to disease need to be reduced in order to meet increasing global food demands associated with growth in the human population. There is a well-recognized need to develop new environmentally friendly control strategies to combat bacterial crop disease. Current control measures involving the use of traditional chemicals or antibiotics are losing their efficacy due to the ...
متن کاملRecoding in bacteriophages and bacterial IS elements.
Dynamic shifts between open reading frames and the redefinition of codon meaning at specific sites, programmed by signals in mRNA, permits versatility of gene expression. Such alterations are characteristic of organisms in all domains of life and serve a variety of functional purposes. In this article, we concentrate on programmed ribosomal frameshifting, stop codon read-through and transcripti...
متن کاملBoosting bacterial metabolism to combat antibiotic resistance.
The metabolic state of a bacterial cell influences its susceptibility to antibiotics. In this issue, Peng et al. (2015) show that resistant bacteria can be sensitized to antibiotic treatment through the addition of exogenous metabolites that stimulate central metabolic pathways and increase drug uptake.
