Microbiological Profile of Infectious Keratitis at a Tertiary Care Hospital

In developing countries, infectious keratitis being the probable cause of preventable blindness, also have a varied epidemiological profile. This study was conducted to know microbiological profile, risk factors, epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern bacteria isolated from patients with corneal ulcers. A total 193 who were clinically diagnosed cases infective in Department Ophthalmology included study. The sample collected by an ophthalmologist received Microbiology department. All demographic details relevant clinical data noted. bacterial identification done using automated methods while fungal conventional method (Vitek2 Compact system, BioMerieux). Out patients, 69% male 31% % females. Majority age group 41- 50 years. Of cases, 83 (43%) showed microbial etiology culture. culture positive 55 (66.3%) 28 (33.7%) bacterial. most common fungus Fusarium species detected 24 (28.9%) followed Aspergillus 14 (16.8%) cases. Gram predominantly keratitis. Staphylococcus aureus 12 (14.4%) out Coagulase negative Staphylococcus. Pseudomonas aeruginosa Among topical antimicrobials, both as well maximum sensitivity levofloxacin. Proper knowledge presentation etiological agents aided examination is necessary order effectively treat ulcers prevent further complications that can lead blindness.
