Microbial Blooms Triggered Pyrite Framboid Enrichment and Oxygen Depletion in Carbonate Platforms Immediately After the Latest Permian Extinction

چکیده

Redox variations across the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) have long been debated, especially during proliferation of PTB microbialites. Here, we report redox fluctuations to evaluate links between two based on pyrite framboid analysis from basin platform settings in South China. During end-Permian extinction, abundant framboids indicate a widespread anoxia that was likely direct cause extinction. In earliest Triassic (Hindeodus parvus conodont zone), were absent ramp and shallow, nonmicrobialite sections. contrast, coeval microbialites yield indicative dysoxia. The fact only confined other habitats indicates microbe bloom may stimulated dysoxic watermass triggered growth within aggregates. Thus, not built reducing settings, but instead, microbial caused local, dysoxia shallow oxygenated platforms after

The end-Permian extinction

The end Permian extinction was the greatest mass extinction of the Phanerozoic Era. It impacted marine and terrestrial plants and animals. Although the rate of the extinction has been controversial in the past, recent evidence suggests that the extinction progressed in two pulses approximately 5-12 million years apart. The second pulse of the extinction is marked by a sharp temperature spike an...

Rapid expansion of oceanic anoxia immediately before the end-Permian mass extinction.

Periods of oceanic anoxia have had a major influence on the evolutionary history of Earth and are often contemporaneous with mass extinction events. Changes in global (as opposed to local) redox conditions can be potentially evaluated using U system proxies. The intensity and timing of oceanic redox changes associated with the end-Permian extinction horizon (EH) were assessed from variations in...

Zinc isotope evidence for intensive magmatism immediately before the end-Permian mass extinction

The end-Permian extinction is typically ascribed to massive volcanic eruptions, but direct geochemical evidence linking the two independent events is generally lacking. Zinc is an important micronutrient of marine phytoplanktons, and Zn isotope (d66Zn) ratios of seawater are markedly higher than those of volcanic rocks and riverine waters. We conducted high-resolution Zn concentration and Zn is...

Volcanic perturbations of the marine environment in South China preceding the latest Permian mass extinction and their biotic effects.

The Dongpan section in southern Guangxi Province records the influence of local volcanic activity on marine sedimentation at intermediate water depths (~200-500 m) in the Nanpanjiang Basin (South China) during the late Permian crisis. We analyzed ~100 samples over a 12-m-thick interval, generating palynological, paleobiological, and geochemical datasets to investigate the nature and causes of e...

Oxygen saturation trends immediately after birth.

OBJECTIVE To describe the changes in oxygen saturation (SpO2) in healthy infants during the first 10 minutes of life. STUDY DESIGN In this observational study, infants > or = 35 weeks gestation at birth who did not require supplemental oxygen had continuous recordings taken of the preductal SpO2 over the first 10 minutes of life. RESULTS A total of 115 infants were analyzed. On average, inf...
