The title compound, C(6)H(7)NO(2), is essentially planar with a dihedral angle of 3.6 (3)° between the pyrrole ring and the methoxy-carbonyl O/C/O/C plane. In the crystal structure, the N atom is a hydrogen-bond donor to the carboxylate C=O O atom of the neighboring mol-ecule. These inter-molecular hydrogen bonds lead to the formation of helical chains along the b axis.

The title compound, C(5)H(7)N(3)O, was obtained by the reaction of ethyl 1H-pyrrol-2-carboxyl-ate and hydrazide hydrate. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked via inter-molecular N-H⋯N and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a supra-molecular grid.
