Metaphors are like lenses: Electrophysiological correlates of novel meaning processing in bilingualism
نویسندگان
چکیده
Aims and objectives: The study provides new insights into how bilingual speakers process semantically complex novel meanings in their native (L1) non-native language (L2). Methodology: employs an EEG method with a semantic decision task to nominal metaphors, similes, as well literal anomalous sentences presented participants’ L1 L2. Data analysis: In total, 29 of Polish who were highly proficient English (L2) took part the study. collected signal was analyzed terms event-related potential analysis. statistical analyses based on behavioral data (reaction times accuracy rates) mean amplitudes for four conditions two languages within N400 LPC time windows. Findings: results revealed effect utterance type modulated by nativeness, where brainwaves sentences, similes converged L2, while graded observed from sentences. contrast, late window, more pronounced sustained negativity metaphors than both languages, thus indicating that meaning integration mechanisms might be similar automaticity L2 when are Altogether, present point taxing involved lexico-semantic access L1, yet such increased effort seems resolved phase. Originality: findings bilinguals construct unfamiliar show cognitive engaged this nativeness. Significance: provide crucial implications further research processing human creativity.

We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the time-course of processing metaphorical and literal sentences in the brain. ERPs were measured to sentence-final (Experiment 1) and mid-sentence (Experiment 2) critical words (CWs) as participants read and made plausibility judgments about familiar nominal metaphors ("A is a B") as well as literal and semantically anomalous sentences of the ...

متن کاملPROCESSING OF METAPHORS IN THE CONTEXT OF BILINGUALISM: AN EVENT-RELATED POTENTIAL STUDY Bachelor Thesis
The processing of literal, novel metaphorical and semantically anomalous expressions in native Dutch speakers and German Dutch learners was examined using event-related potentials. The N400 component was determined for expressions which were formulated in an “A is a B” form and varied in their degree of figurativeness. A three-choice task was used in which the participants had to decide whether...
متن کاملElectrophysiological correlates of the disrupted processing of anger in alcoholism.
OBJECTIVE Recent studies have shown that alcoholism is characterized by a deficit in the processing of emotional facial expressions (EFE), and that this deficit could be "emotion specific". The present study explored the hypothesis that there is a specific deficit for the EFE of anger compared to another negative emotion (disgust). Moreover, on the basis of event-related potentials (ERPs), this...
