Mesozoic intraplate tectonism of East Asia due to flat subduction of a composite terrane slab

The widespread Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (J2-K1) intraplate tectonism of East Asia has recently been proposed reflect the flat subduction Izanagi plate, whose mechanism, however, remains poorly constrained. Here, we compare these geological records with those within western United States (U.S.) during Laramide subduction. Two prominent differences are identified slab advance: 1) U.S. witnessed continental-scale subsidence and marine inundation, while experienced mostly basin inversion implying uplift; 2) landward migrating magmatism in quickly evolved into a regional magmatic lull that lasted for >40 Myr, but Asian was largely continuous space time. Assisted numerical models, show could indeed reproduce observed crustal deformation topographic history advance retreat slab. We further find this should be more buoyant than so former oceanic break off which led surface uplift instead subsidence, crust melted easily an one. observation J2-K1 contemporary assembly (ca. 180–137 Ma) exotic terranes along east coast implies sab underplating North China Northeast likely represented continental lithosphere associated terranes. terrane have carried flattened portions nearby it, forming giant composite defined Asia.
