Against mereological nihilism

I argue that mereological nihilism fails because it cannot answer (what I describe as) the special arrangement question: when is it true that the xs (the mereological simples) are arranged F-wise? I suggest that the answers given in the literature fail and that the obvious responses that could be made look to undermine the motivations for adopting nihilism in the first place.

Mereological nihilism and the special arrangement question

Mereological nihilism is the thesis that composite objects – objects with proper parts – do not exist. Nihilists generally paraphrase talk of composite objects F into talk of there being “x s arranged F-wise” (for example, while nihilists deny that there are tables, they concede that there are “x s arranged table-wise”). Recently several philosophers have argued that nihilism is defective insof...

Keeping It Simple

The Post-Albers reaction scheme of the Na ϩ ,K ϩ-ATPase has been remarkably successful, for over a quarter-century , in explaining the biochemical behavior of the isolated enzyme, and is still the backbone of current bio-physical models for the various transport modes (elec-trogenic Na/K exchange; electroneutral and electrogenic Na/Na exchanges; K/K exchange, etc.) of the sodium pump. Because o...

Keeping it Simple: Financial Literacy and Rules of Thumb

Micro-entrepreneurs often lack the financial literacy required for the complex financial decisions they face. We conduct a randomized control trial with a bank in the Dominican Republic to compare the impact of two distinct programs: a standard accounting training versus a simplified, rule-of-thumb training that teaches basic financial heuristics. Only the latter produced significant improvemen...

Language Acquisition and Probabilistic Models: keeping it simple

Hierarchical Bayesian Models (HBMs) have been used with some success to capture empirically observed patterns of underand overgeneralization in child language acquisition. However, as is well known, HBMs are “ideal” learning systems, assuming access to unlimited computational resources that may not be available to child language learners. Consequently, it remains crucial to carefully assess the...
