Mercury Anomalies Link to Extensive Volcanism Across the Late Devonian Frasnian–Famennian Boundary in South China

چکیده
The Late Devonian Frasnian–Famennian (F–F) mass extinction has been long-time debated by non-volcanic causes, extra-terrestrial impacts, and large igneous province (LIP) eruptions. To better understand the ultimate cause of F–F extinction, here we investigate chemostratigraphy mercury (Hg) total organic carbon (TOC) on two marine strata in Dushan area, South China. In both sections, high Hg Hg/TOC anomalies were observed near boundary. These are line with those recently Morocco, Germany, Poland, north Russia, suggesting a global flux. LIP eruptions, which believed to have emitted massive amounts Hg, could be responsible for around coincide Frasnian fauna implying causal link between Viluy, Kola, Pripyat-Dnieper-Donets eruptions extinction.

Invasive Species and Biodiversity Crises: Testing the Link in the Late Devonian
During the Late Devonian Biodiversity Crisis, the primary driver of biodiversity decline was the dramatic reduction in speciation rates, not elevated extinction rates; however, the causes of speciation decline have been previously unstudied. Speciation, the formation of new species from ancestral populations, occurs by two primary allopatric mechanisms: vicariance, where the ancestral populatio...
متن کاملMercury, volcanism, and mass extinctions.
Understanding the causes and timings of mass extinctions are important for our understanding of the evolution of life on Earth and how major biogeochemical cycles have been and can be perturbed. Four of the five biggest mass extinctions (1) are associated with large igneous provinces (LIPS), which are the most voluminous volcanic events on Earth, but whether LIPS triggered the extinctions is di...
متن کاملLate-stage Effusive Volcanism on Mercury: Evidence from Mansurian Impact Basins
Introduction: The globally extensive smooth plains of Mercury are believed to be mostly volcanic in origin [1]. Widespread effusive volcanism on Mercury is thought to have ended by ~3.5 Ga due to secular cooling of the planet’s interior, and contraction of its lithosphere [2]. As the planet cools and contracts, melt should be produced at a slower rate and in smaller volumes, so it will stall de...
