This study is aimed at exploring the rationale behind academic mentor’s success, as mentoring a developmental process involving capacity-building, knowledge transfer and employee retention in organizations. paper conceptual conducted with an extensive review of relevant literature on mentoring. The reviewed centres meaning, forms types mentoring, qualities good mentor, stages benefits challenges excellence. was anchored descriptive theory by Kram (1985). found that regardless how well mentor mentee fit together, either form or positive way, relationship should be professionally structured considered respected both parties. also concludes most successful mentorship usually evolve into friendship partners learning providing support for each other. contributes existing examining ways to overcoming mentors challenges. No previous research has illustrated could lead excellence Nigerian tertiary institution.
