Mentoring in the USDA Forest Service: A Survey of Aquatic Professionals

Abstract Mentoring is suggested as an important strategy to promote workplace inclusivity and shown be positively associated with high employee morale, yet mentee needs experiences may not universal. To evaluate mentoring impacts from the perspective of USDA Forest Service employees, we conducted online survey 251 aquatic professionals, including managers scientists. 70% respondents had mentors, mentorship status did vary across demographic characteristics. Previous relationships were most frequently identified “informal” rather than “formal”; female employees more likely desire formal mentoring. Mentored found their work challenging, fulfilling, valuable unmentored respondents. Mentees looked for mentors who could provide constructive feedback, speak candidly, use active listening skills, cared about careers. Overall, satisfied mentors’ skills. Despite strong demand mentoring, access among professionals appears low all categories.
