MENTAL AND BEHAVIOURAL DISORDERS IN “THE PROPOSAL” BY ANTON CHEKHOV

Based on the comparative approach, narrative medicine and pathology diagnostics, article examines personal psychological deviations of characters in Anton Chekhov. The reveals main stages diagnosis interpretation hypochondria, melancholy, timidity from antiquity, where pathological features personality types temperament were associated with balance elements basic fluids human body, to Enlightenment modernity, pathologies dictated by mental predisposition social environment. Molière’s goal is identify type “imaginary patient” as an expression hypochondria symptom ridicule a quack doctor, while for Chekhov («Proposal»), character’s complicated procrastination, designed enhance comic effect described situation. This allows us consider new way difference between typological approach being combination passions classical comedy mature realism 19th century. conclusion made about importance literary study history civilisation intellectual culture.
