Mechanisms of Male-Male Interference during Dispersal of Orchid Pollen

چکیده
Siring success of flowering plants depends on the fates male gametophytes, which compete for access to stigmas, stylar resources, and ovules. Although rarely considered, pollen may often during dispersal, affecting processes required export stigmas: pickup, transport, deposition. We quantified dispersal interference by tracking bee-mediated stained Anacamptis morio (Orchidaceae) from individual donor flowers inferred affected mechanisms basis fit a process-based model. During trials, all recipient were either emasculated, precluding with pollen, or intact, adding potentially interfering pollinator. The presence competing pollinaria bees reduced pickup additional pollinaria, doubled overall proportion lost total 27%. Interference specifically increased loss between successive flower visits variation in deposition among it likely also contact stigmas when occurred. Thus, altering removal, deposition, male-male can significantly—and perhaps commonly—limit plant-siring success.

15 صفحه اولDispersal of Engineered Male Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes
BACKGROUND Aedes aegypti, the principal vector of dengue fever, have been genetically engineered for use in a sterile insect control programme. To improve our understanding of the dispersal ecology of mosquitoes and to inform appropriate release strategies of 'genetically sterile' male Aedes aegypti detailed knowledge of the dispersal ability of the released insects is needed. METHODOLOGY/PRI...
متن کاملMechanisms of Genic Male Sterility
For normal sexual reproductive development, coordination must occur between both male and female organ ontogeny. An abnormality at any point in this process may lead to sterility. Classification of sterility can be divided into heritable and nonheritable sterility. Numerous schemes for mechanisms controlled by nuclear genes (genic male sterility) have been devised to identify the timing and loc...
متن کاملMonomorphism, male-male competition, and mechanisms of sexual dimorphism.
Reconstructing sociosexual variables such as mating system and social organization from fragmentary fossils and other sources of data remains a major challenge in understanding the evolution of behavioral and morphological diversity within the primate order. Often, a particular mating system can lead to the evolution of novel behavior (e.g., ‘‘competitive’’ paternal care in tamarins; Garber, 19...
متن کاملFactors influencing male affiliation and coalitions in a species with male dispersal and intense male–male competition, Colobus vellerosus
Male Colobus vellerosus compete intensely for access to females, which sometimes leads to mortal wounding. Yet, males often form cooperative relationships to overtake prime-aged males and immigrate into bisexual groups. We investigated the factors that predicted the presence of coalitions and affiliative relationships among males in this species. Interactions among males in 292 dyads from six g...
