Quorum regulation of luminescence in Vibrio fischeri.
Luminescence in Vibrio fischeri is controlled by a population density-responsive regulatory mechanism called quorum sensing. Elements of the mechanism include: LuxI, an acyl-homoserine lactone (acyl-HSL) synthase that directs synthesis of the diffusible signal molecule, 3-oxo-hexanoyl-HSL (V. fischeri autoinducer-1, VAI-1); LuxR, a transcriptional activator protein necessary for response to VAI...
متن کاملLuminescence control in the marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri: An analysis of the dynamics of lux regulation.
A mathematical model has been developed based on the fundamental properties of the control system formed by the lux genes and their products in Vibrio fischeri. The model clearly demonstrates how the components of this system work together to create two, stable metabolic states corresponding to the expression of the luminescent and non-luminescent phenotypes. It is demonstrated how the cell can...
متن کاملVibrio fischeri sigma54 controls motility, biofilm formation, luminescence, and colonization.
In this study, we demonstrated that the putative Vibrio fischeri rpoN gene, which encodes sigma(54), controls flagellar biogenesis, biofilm development, and bioluminescence. We also show that rpoN plays a requisite role initiating the symbiotic association of V. fischeri with juveniles of the squid Euprymna scolopes.
متن کاملCharacterizing the Regulation of tfoX in Vibrio fischeri
Natural transformation describes how some bacteria can incorporate exogenous DNA into their genome and acquire new traits. This phenomenon occurs in Vibrios and is induced by the biopolymer chitin. In Vibrios, TfoX is a primary regulator of natural transformation. The mechanisms underlying chitin-induced natural transformation and activation of TfoX in Vibrio fischeri remain unclear. This proje...
متن کاملInterplay of two quorum sensing regulation systems of Vibrio fischeri.
Many bacteria developed a possibility to recognise aspects of their environment or to communicate with each other by chemical signals. An important strategy is the so-called quorum sensing (QS), a regulatory mechanism for the gene expression, where the bacteria measure their own cell density by means of this signalling pathway. One of the best-studied species using QS is the marine luminescent ...
