Mechanisms for longitudinal transport on early life stages in benthic-pelagic fishes within a tide-dominated estuary

چکیده
Mechanisms that control the longitudinal transport of larvae and juveniles in nursery grounds such as estuaries are reported for some species. However, behaviour population consequences these mechanisms still uncertain. In this study, we tested selective tidal-stream from along-channel (up- downstream) cross-channel (from one margin to other) perspectives two kinds fish: estuarine-resident gobies ( Pomatoschistus spp.) marine estuarine-opportunistic anchovies Engraulis encrasicolus ). Three cruises were conducted lower Guadalquivir estuary, on ebb flood spring tides summer. Plankton samples collected across a channel section, at three stations (one middle adjacent shallower areas), near surface bottom simultaneously. addition, multiple physico-chemical variables (temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, chlorophyll-a, along with wind current direction velocity) measured examine different correlations used by studied fish their strategies. The benthic distribution indicated they currents lateral (shallow) areas ingress into remain temperature and/or oxygen being main possible cues. On contrary, more abundant surface, especially tide, showing downstream advection, which was mainly influenced salinity. largest individual lateral/shallow zones suggested behavioural ontogeny, which, together induced transport, could contribute retention. This comparison also enhanced knowledge habitat species common estuaries, gobies. • anchovy moves longitudinally through layers. spp. move Anchovy showed behavioral ontogeny preferences individuals. Spatial Variability of Benthic-Pelagic Coupling in an Estuary Ecosystem: Consequences for Microphytobenthos Resuspension Phenomenon
The high degree of physical factors in intertidal estuarine ecosystem increases material processing between benthic and pelagic compartments. In these ecosystems, microphytobenthos resuspension is a major phenomenon since its contribution to higher trophic levels can be highly significant. Understanding the sediment and associated microphytobenthos resuspension and its fate in the water column ...
متن کاملCirculation and Suspended Particulate Matter Transport in a Tidally Dominated Estuary: Caravelas Estuary, Bahia, Brazil
The circulation and transport of suspended particulate matter in the Caravelas Estuary are assessed. Nearlysynoptic hourly hydrographic, current (ADCP velocity and volume transport) and suspended particulate matter data were collected during a full semidiurnal spring tide, on the two transects Boca do Tomba and Barra Velha and on longitudinal sections at low and high tide. On the first transect...
متن کاملBayesian change point analysis of abundance trends for pelagic fishes in the upper San Francisco Estuary.
We examined trends in abundance of four pelagic fish species (delta smelt, longfin smelt, striped bass, and threadfin shad) in the upper San Francisco Estuary, California, USA, over 40 years using Bayesian change point models. Change point models identify times of abrupt or unusual changes in absolute abundance (step changes) or in rates of change in abundance (trend changes). We coupled Bayesi...

Comparative glycoproteome analysis: dynamics of protein glycosylation during metamorphic transition from Pelagic to Benthic life stages in three invertebrates.
The life cycle of most benthic marine invertebrates has two distinct stages: the pelagic larval stage and the sessile juvenile stage. The transition between the larval stage and the juvenile stage is often abrupt and may be triggered by post-translational modification of proteins. Glycosylation, a very important post-translational modification, influences the biological activity of proteins. We...
