Destruction of cyanide and thiocyanate by ferrate [Iron(VI)]

A cyanide-laden effluent of the gold mining industry must be treated before it can be released to the aquatic environment. Current treatment methods such as natural degradation, sulfur based, hydrogen peroxide, ozonation, and alkaline chlorination are not adequate for meeting newer treatment standards. A new chemical oxidant that utilizes iron in the +6 oxidation state, ferrate [Fe(VI)] was stu...

Ferrate(VI) oxidation of zinc-cyanide complex.

Zinc-cyanide complexes are found in gold mining effluents and in metal finishing rinse water. The effect of Zn(II) on the oxidation of cyanide by ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)O(4)(2-), Fe(VI)) was thus investigated by studying the kinetics of the reaction of Fe(VI) with cyanide present in a potassium salt of a zinc cyanide complex (K(2)Zn(CN)(4)) and in a mixture of Zn(II) and cyanide solutions as a func...

Ferrate(VI) Oxidation of Aqueous Cyanide

The rates of oxidation of cyanide with Fe(VI) were measured as a function of pH (8.0-12) and temperature (1530 °C). The reaction was found to be first order for each reactant. The rates decrease with increasing pH. The energy of activation was found to be 38.9 ( 1.0 kJ mol-1 at pH 9.0. The removal of cyanide by oxidation with Fe(VI) was studied at pH 7.5, 9.0, and 12.0. Fe(VI) removal efficienc...

Oxidation of Gabapentin by Potassium Ferrate (VI) in Alkaline Media-Kinetics and Mechanism Study

In the present research, the reaction kinetics of Potassium Ferrate (VI) with gabapentin were studied by using spectrophotometer. The reaction was determined under alkaline condition at the different temperatures of 288.2K-308.2K. All data was obtained from the pseudo-first order reaction. It was found that the reaction is a first-order for reactant. The observed rates constants (kobs) increase...

Kinetics and mechanism of the racemic addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to aldehydes catalysed by Lewis bases.

The mechanism by which four Lewis bases, triethylamine, tetrabutylammonium thiocyanate, tetrabutylammonium azide and tetrabutylammonium cyanide, catalyse the addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to aldehydes is studied by a combination of kinetic and spectroscopic methods. The reactions can exhibit first or second order kinetics corresponding to three different reaction mechanisms. Spectroscopic ...
