Mechanically robust 3D graphene macroassembly with high surface area.

We report the synthesis of a three-dimensional (3D) macroassembly of graphene sheets with electrical conductivity (∼10(2) S m(-1)) and Young's modulus (∼50 MPa) orders of magnitude higher than those previously reported, super-compressive deformation behavior (∼60% failure strain), and surface areas (>1300 m(2) g(-1)) approaching theoretically maximum values.

Biologically and Mechanically Biocompatible Titanium Alloys

Nb, Ta, and Zr are the favorable nontoxic and allergy-free alloying elements suitable for use in titanium alloys for biomedical applications. Low-rigidity titanium alloys composed of nontoxic and allergy-free elements are receiving considerable attention. The advantage of low-rigidity titanium alloys in the healing of bone fracture and bone remodeling is successfully proven by using tibia of ra...

Nano- and Micropatterning of Optically Transparent, Mechanically Robust, Biocompatible Silk Fibroin Films

Biopolymers, such as silk fibroin, collagen, and chitosan, are promising candidates for a variety of applications that merge the fields of biomedical optics and biomaterials. Biocompatible silk fibroin, in particular, shows promise as a biomaterial, based on a number of attributes. Silk fibroin is the strongest and toughest natural fiber known and is easily formed into robust films of thermodyn...

Biocompatible 3D Matrix with Antimicrobial Properties.

The aim of this study was to develop, characterize and assess the biological activity of a new regenerative 3D matrix with antimicrobial properties, based on collagen (COLL), hydroxyapatite (HAp), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and usnic acid (UA). The prepared 3D matrix was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Microscopy (FT-IRM), Transmission Electron Microsc...

Recent Progress in Mechanically Biocompatible Titanium-Based Materials

Mechanical and biological biocompatibility is important consideration for materials that are used as metallic implants. During the past two decades, many β-type titanium alloys composed of non-toxic and hypoallergenic elements with low Young’s moduli have been developed worldwide. Recently, the development of new titanium-based materials to improve the mechanical and biological biocompatibility...
