Measuring the Anisotropy in Interfacial Tension of Nematic Liquid Crystals

چکیده
Liquid crystal (LC) phases typically show anisotropic alignment-dependent properties, such as viscosity and dielectric permittivity, so it stands to reason that LCs also have interfacial tensions. Measuring the tension γ of an LC with conventional methods, pendant drops, can be challenging, however, especially when we need know for different aligning conditions, is case seek Δγ, anisotropy. Here, present measurements Δγ common synthetic nematic compound 5CB against water using a microfluidic droplet aspiration technique. To ensure tangential normal alignment, respectively, add poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), stabilizer measure concentrations stabilizer. By fitting Szyszkowski equation data, extrapolate zero-stabilizer concentration, obtaining pure each alignment. For find γ⊥=31.9±0.8 mN·m−1, on order 1 mN·m−1 greater than γ||=30.8±5 This resonates empirical knowledge aligns tangentially interface water. The main uncertainty arises from use polymeric PVA tangential-promoting Future improvements in accuracy may expected if replaced by low molar mass ensures

Interfacial energy for nematic liquid crystals : beyond the spherical approximation
By means of a simple pseudomolecular model the surface elastic properties of nematic liquid crystals are analysed. We show that in the Maier-Saupe approximation for the intermolecular interaction and supposing the interaction volume of ellipsoidal shape, the bulk elastic constants of splay and twist are expected to be equal and different from the bend one. The dependence of the bulk elastic con...
متن کاملA molecular theory of surface tension in nematic liquid crystals
The surface tension at the free surface of a nematic liquid crystal is computed using the Fowler-Kirkwood-Buff approximation to the interface, and a mean field approximation to the molecular pair distribution function. It is found for a Van der Waals interaction between molecules that : a) the molecules always prefer an orientation in the plane of the surface; b) there is a gap at the nematic-i...
متن کاملHomeotropic alignment of nematic liquid crystals with negative dielectric anisotropy
We report here uniform and defect-free homeotropic alignment of nematic liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy (Deo0) on cleaned substrates, which can be changed to bright state (homogeneous alignment) by applying an electric field. However, non-uniformity in the bright state would not be desirable for display devices. Therefore, silane treated and gently rubbed substrates have be...

متن کاملNematic Liquid Crystals: Defects
There are two types of defects in the uniaxial nematic F phase: line defects (disclinations) and point defects (hedgehogs and boojums). These are reviewed at three levels: (i) experimental observations; (ii) topological classification; and (iii) curvature elasticity. The reader is referred to the textbooks on liquid crystals (Chandrasekhar 1992, de Gennes and Prost 1993), defects (Kltman 1983),...
