Measurement of the neutron decay electron-antineutrino angular correlation by the aCORN experiment

چکیده
The aCORN experiment measures the neutron-decay electron-antineutrino correlation ($a$ coefficient) using a novel method based on an asymmetry in proton time-of-flight for events where beta electron and recoil are detected delayed coincidence. We report data analysis result from second run at NIST Center Neutron Research, high-flux cold neutron beam new NG-C guide end position: $a=\ensuremath{-}0.10758\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.00136(\text{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.00148(\text{sys})$. This is consistent within uncertainties with first NG-6 beam. Combining two runs, we obtain $a=\ensuremath{-}0.10782\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.00124(\text{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.00133(\text{sys})$, which has overall relative standard uncertainty of 1.7%. corresponding ratio weak coupling constants $\ensuremath{\lambda}={G}_{A}/{G}_{V}$ $\ensuremath{\lambda}=\ensuremath{-}1.2796\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0062$.

aCORN: A New Measurement of the Electron- antineutrino Correlation Coefficient in Neutron Decay
The aCoRn collaboration plans to measure the electron-antineutrino correlation coefficient (“little a”) in neutron decay. “a” is the least well known of the neutron decay coefficients. It’s value, when combined with other neutron decay parameters, can be used to determine the weak vector and axial vector coupling constants and to test the validity and self-consistency of the Electroweak Standar...

The coefficient a 0 has been derived from a measurement of the integral spectrum of recoil protons stored in a quasi-Penning trap with inhomogeneous magnetic field and adiabatic focusing onto an electro-static mirror of potential variable in 10 V steps between 0 V and 850 V. Correction for incomplete transfer of energy from transverse to longitudinal degrees of freedom, and the violation of the...
متن کاملA method for an improved measurement of the electron–antineutrino correlation in free neutron beta decay
The angular correlation between the beta electron and antineutrino in nuclear beta decay is characterized by the dimensionless parameter a. The value of a for free neutron decay, when combined with other neutron decay parameters, can be used to determine the weak vector and axial vector coupling constants gV and gA and test the validity and selfconsistency of the Electroweak Standard Model. متن کاملMeasurement of Neutron Decay Parameters—The abBA Experiment
We are developing an experiment to measure the correlations a, A, and B, and the Fierz interference term b in neutron decay, with a precision of approximately 10(-4). The experiment uses an electromagnetic spectrometer in combination with two large-area segmented silicon detectors to detect the proton and electron from the decay in coincidence, with 4π acceptance for both particles. For the neu...
متن کاملOn the Measurement of the Electron-Neutrino Correlation in Neutron Beta Decay
I present a new approach to the measurement of a, the electron-neutrino correlation, in neutron beta decay. A precise measurement of a can lead to a precise determination of ratio of the axial vector and vector coupling constants, Ga/Gv . Coincidences between electrons and protons are detected in a field-expansion spectrometer. The field-expansion spectrometer is designed to make 1/TOF ≈ | p p|...
