Meaning-Making in an Imperial and Papal Context

Abstract From a diachronic perspective, and considering both textual visual evidence, this article traces the relic cult of SS Gregory Nazianzen John Chrysostom. It focuses on two historical contexts, hitherto not compared with each other, in which relics architectural frame they were placed acquired significant additional meaning value: tenth-century Constantinople sixteenth- century Rome. I will show how Emperor Constantine VII , Holy Apostles, Pope XIII St. Peter’s, used same as an instrument process meaning-making, thereby asserting their own authority prestige.
