Mean path length invariance in wave-scattering beyond the diffusive regime

چکیده

Diffusive random walks feature the surprising property that average length of all possible trajectories enter and exit a finite domain is determined solely by boundary. Changes in diffusion constant or mean-free path, characterize process, leave mean path unchanged. Here we demonstrate experimentally this result can be transferred to scattering waves, even when wave interference leads marked deviations from process. Using versatile microwave setup, establish invariance for crossover Anderson localization case band gap photonic crystal. We obtain these results on based transmission matrix measurement through novel procedure turns out more robust absorption incomplete localized regime as compared an assessment full matrix.

Path-length-resolved dynamic light scattering: modeling the transition from single to diffusive scattering.

Dynamic light-scattering spectroscopy is used to study Brownian motion within highly scattering samples. The fluctuations of the light field that is backscattered by a suspension of polystyrene microspheres are measured as power spectra by use of low-coherence interferometry to obtain path-length resolution. The data are modeled as the sum of contributions to the detected light weighted by a Po...

Scattering mean free path in continuous complex media: beyond the Helmholtz equation.

We present theoretical calculations of the ensemble-averaged (or effective or coherent) wave field propagating in a heterogeneous medium considered as one realization of a random process. In the literature, it is usually assumed that heterogeneity can be accounted for by a random scalar function of the space coordinates, termed the potential. Physically, this amounts to replacing the constant w...

Path-length-resolved dynamic light scattering in highly scattering random media: The transition to diffusing wave spectroscopy

We used low coherence interferometry to measure Brownian motion within highly scattering random media. A coherence gate was applied to resolve the optical path-length distribution and to separate ballistic from diffusive light. Our experimental analysis provides details on the transition from single scattering to light diffusion and its dependence on the system parameters. We found that the tra...

Invariance property of wave scattering through disordered media.

A fundamental insight in the theory of diffusive random walks is that the mean length of trajectories traversing a finite open system is independent of the details of the diffusion process. Instead, the mean trajectory length depends only on the system's boundary geometry and is thus unaffected by the value of the mean free path. Here we show that this result is rooted on a much deeper level th...

Multi-source quantitative PAT in diffusive regime

Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is a novel hybrid medical imaging technique that aims to combine the large contrast of optical coefficients with the high resolution capabilities of ultrasound. We assume that the first step of PAT, namely the reconstruction of a map of absorbed radiation from ultrasound boundary measurement, has been done. We focus on quantitative photoacoustic tomography (QPAT),...
