Maturity Status, Relative Age and Constituent Year Effects in Young Iberian Kayakers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Like in other sports systems, kayaking, young athletes are commonly grouped by their birth years. This study analyzed maturity status, relative age, and constituent age effects Under 14 (U14) 16 (U16) Iberian male kayakers. One hundred thirty (U14: n =80; U16: = 50) kayakers aged 14.10 ± 1.06 years were assessed for anthropometry, performance, maturity, sport experience. The year was divided into four quarters (BQ). There no significant differences the kayaker’s distribution BQ both categories (U14, p 0.348; U16, 0.709) or total sample (p 0.783). Six of ten best U14 category born year’s first half, eight among U16 Talent detection selection systems based solely on kayakers’ performances may imply some bias. ways to get around this situation would be adopt a grouping system similar bio-banding, allowing maximum number practitioners experience possibility obtaining competitive success.

Biological Maturity Status Strongly Intensifies the Relative Age Effect in Alpine Ski Racing
The relative age effect (RAE) is a well-documented phenomenon in youth sports. This effect exists when the relative age quarter distribution of selected athletes shows a biased distribution with an over-representation of relatively older athletes. In alpine ski racing, it exists in all age categories (national youth levels up to World Cup). Studies so far could demonstrate that selected ski rac...
متن کاملDifferences in Anthropometry, Biological Age and Physical Fitness Between Young Elite Kayakers and Canoeists
The aim of this study was to determine the anthropometric and physical characteristics of youth elite paddlers and to identify the differences between kayakers and canoeists. A total of 171 male paddlers (eighty-nine kayakers and eighty-two canoeists), aged 13.69 ± 0.57 years (mean ± SD) volunteered to participate in this study. The participants completed basic anthropometric assessments (body ...
متن کاملMaturity status influences the relative age effect in national top level youth alpine ski racing and soccer
Since the relative age effect (RAE) characterizes a problem in all age categories of alpine ski racing and soccer and the fact that, yet, to date the underlying factors have not been well investigated, the aim of the present study was to assess the influence of the biological maturity status on the RAE among youth alpine ski racers (YSR) and soccer players (SP). In total, 183 male and female YS...
متن کاملA New Dimension to Relative Age Effects: Constant Year Effects in German Youth Handball
In this manuscript we argue for a broader use of the term 'relative age effect' due to the influence of varying development policies on the development of sport expertise. Two studies are presented on basis of data from Schorer, et al. [1]. The first showed clear 'constant year effects' in the German handball talent development system. A shift in year groupings for the female athletes resulted ...
متن کاملKinanthropometric comparison between young elite kayakers and canoeists.
The aims of this study were to describe and compare kinanthropometric characteristics of elite young kayakers and canoeists and to compare their proportionality with Olympic paddlers. One hundred and twenty young elite sprint paddlers (66 kayakers and 58 canoeists), aged 13- and 14-years-old, were assessed using a battery of 32 anthropometric dimensions. Somatotypes, Phantom Z-scores and correc...
