Material Behavior around the FSW/FSP Tool Described by Molecular Dynamics

Friction stir welding and processing (FSW/FSP) involves severe plastic deformation of metals or polymers at high temperature around a rotating tool. The material’s flow is usually modelled by FEM using complex combination thermomechanical friction models. However, the description behavior first atomic layers in contact with tool cannot be undertaken continuum mechanics modelling such as FEM. Among available simulation techniques, molecular dynamics (MD) where heat are generated material layers’ relative movement, allows work piece In this work, aluminum, effect advancing speeds on FSW/FSP crystallography vicinity discussed. data analyzed demonstrate that normalization weld-pitch parameter pin radius obtaining reliable input, momentum, temperatures typical critical region processes MD. results show MD provide an input for multiscale modelling.
