Abstract This essay offers a revaluation of the materiality early modern Netherlandish tombs, field that has only recently attracted serious scholarly attention. Her contribution focuses on role played by as crucial yet often overlooked aspect these monuments. Tomb sculpture generally relied combination material properties: potential realistic representation, durability, intrinsic value, and splendour. Most suitable for convincing representation dead body in this period was translucent alabaster with its warm flesh tone, while Italian white marble bronze referenced antiquity classical notions durability. The use specific sets local imported materials resulted unique ‘material image’ tomb sculpture, which effectively contributed to preservation deceased’s memoria, social status, dynastic personal magnificence.
