MAST Upgrade microwave heating and current drive system – engineering design overview

MAST-Upgrade (MAST-U) is undergoing several enhancements to deliver increased performance and functionality. One such enhancement the design, development, implementation of an Electron Bernstein Wave (EBW) Heating Current Drive (HCD) System. The MAST-U EBW System aims provide experimental data for model validation, a greater understanding physics its capabilities. provides up 1.8 MW microwave power into plasma, through system comprising: high voltage supplies; two gyrotrons; evacuated transmission lines; steerable in-vessel launching system; associated control ancillary systems. gyrotrons from Kyoto Fusioneering have 0.9 output capability at dual frequencies 28GHz 34.8GHz, allowing start-up current drive studies be carried out their respective optimum frequencies. Additional diagnostics, termed interceptor plates, are proposed sit in path first reflection. These will measure reflected both act as interlock if too high, key information on coupling efficiency.
