Masculinity, embodiment and identity-work: How do organisational members use their bodies as identity resources to (re) accomplish hegemonic masculinity?

This article focuses on a rugby organisation, in which distinct configuration of hyper-masculinity exists as the hegemonic one. Using three storified accounts that emerged during ethnographic research, empirics show when player’s body fails to align him with masculine ideals, he encounters an identity-threat and separation from organisational collective. In turn, player participates embodied remedial identity-work processes, (re)accomplish masculinity (re)integrate collective, using his identity-resource counter identity-threat. Empirics reveals extent underpins expressions masculinity, how important is site used symbolically maintain viable identity. Ontologically, it emphasised men whose bodies appear fit normative ideals do not necessarily encounter aspects their experiences unproblematically; rather, – like those less actors are vulnerable identity threats source exclusion. encourages scholars think about relationship between embodiment, gender, hegemony integration settings more nuanced ways.
