Marine vessel powertrain design optimization: Multiperiod modeling considering retrofits and alternative fuels

Over the coming decades, maritime transportation will transition from fossil hydrocarbon fuels to hydrogen, ammonia, and synthetic produced using renewable electricity as primary energy source. In this context, a shipowner needs identify cost-efficient plan for adoption of alternative onboard conversion system retrofits. This paper presents multiperiod decision model selection components under increasingly stringent CO 2 emissions regulations cost forecasts over multidecade planning horizon. The considers choice newbuild architecture, timing retrofits, component sizes, allocation converters with objective minimizing total ownership (TCO). problem is formulated discrete time mixed-integer linear program. application numerically illustrated Baltic Sea roll-on/roll-off ferry. main findings are: (i) modifying retrofits obtains 43% lower TCO compared fuel switching alone; (ii) batteries contribute 23% TCO; (iii) optimal installation period can be shorter than their maximum lifetime; (iv) running an engine hydrogen favored cells (v) hybrid propulsion key future-proofing design short sea vessels.
