Marine climate change risks to biodiversity and society in the ROPME Sea Area

چکیده
The subtropical ROPME Sea Area (RSA), comprising the Gulf, Gulf of Oman and northern Arabian Sea, is a heavily exploited sea region that experiences extreme environmental conditions, for which climate change expected to further impact marine ecosystems coastal communities, sectors industries. Climate risk assessments provide valuable tool inform decision-making adaptation planning through identifying prioritising risks and/or opportunities. Using first UK Change Risk Assessment as an example, assessment was undertaken environment RSA time. Through extensive literature review workshop involving regional experts, were identified, scored prioritised. A total 45 spanned two key themes: ‘Risks Biodiversity’ Economy Society’. Of these, 13 categorised ‘severe’, including degradation coral reefs their associated ecological assemblages, shifts in distribution wild-capture fisheries resources, changes phytoplankton primary productivity, impacts on threats infrastructure industries, operations safety maritime transport. diversity identified transboundary nature highlight responses will require coordinated action cooperation at multiple scales across RSA. This provides crucial baseline largely overlooked geographic area, can be used underpin future change, serve ‘blueprint’ similar other shared seas.

Biodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)
The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...

plankton studies are one of the major items of the marine scientific activities in the ropme seaarea, whereas numerous investigations have been conducted on the plankton during the past century. forphytoplankton, species composition, abundance and biomass, primary production, harmful algal blooms, redtide, toxic species, and eutrophication were considered. zooplankton studies included species c...

15 صفحه اولAn effective regional Marine Protected Area network for the ROPME Sea Area: unrealistic vision or realistic possibility?
Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) targets aim to encourage the establishment of an effective global network of MPAs covering 10% of coastal and marine ecoregions by 2020. This paper presents findings from the first ever regional assessment of MPA management effectiveness in the ROPME (Regional Organisation for the Protection of the Marine Environment) Sea Area (RSA). The RSA, extends from the Gu...
