Marine biodiversity of a pristine coral reef in French Polynesia

چکیده

Understanding the natural state of coral reefs is paramount to evaluate response these ecosystems local and global human impacts as well management conservation strategies. In French Polynesia, some islands are still pristine or uninhabited, such Tupai atoll. has been with access lagoon prohibited since 2010. However, fishers from nearby often take outer reef slope at Tupai. Our marine biodiversity survey (coral, macro-invertebrates, fish) conducted in 2019 highlighted a low density commercial fish species top-predators on comparison lagoon, where represented 16% (of density) functional trophic groups. surveys also showed high living cover (46%) Tupai, perhaps due absence both touristic sub-aquatic activities pollution private activities. Overall, this initial scientific assessment granted an understanding spatial patterns coral, assemblages (i.e., lagoon), representing ecological baseline that could inform strategies ensure preservation ecosystem.

Toward pristine biomass: reef fish recovery in coral reef marine protected areas in Kenya.

Identifying the rates of recovery of fish in no-take areas is fundamental to designing protected area networks, managing fisheries, estimating yields, identifying ecological interactions, and informing stakeholders about the outcomes of this management. Here we study the recovery of coral reef fishes through 37 years of protection using a space-for-time chronosequence of four marine national pa...

Ecology. Coral reef biodiversity--habitat size matters.

Coral reefs are the most diverse of all marine ecosystems (1), with estimates of reef species ranging from 600,000 to more than 9 million species worldwide (2, 3). This biodiversity is most pronounced in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans (1, 4), but decreases with increasing distance from the Indo-Australian archipelago. For example, reefs in the central Indo-Pacific have more than 10 times...

The importance of standardization for biodiversity comparisons: A case study using autonomous reef monitoring structures (ARMS) and metabarcoding to measure cryptic diversity on Mo’orea coral reefs, French Polynesia

The advancement of metabarcoding techniques, declining costs of high-throughput sequencing and development of systematic sampling devices, such as autonomous reef monitoring structures (ARMS), have provided the means to gather a vast amount of diversity data from cryptic marine communities. However, such increased capability could also lead to analytical challenges if the methods used to examin...

Functional versatility supports coral reef biodiversity.

We explore the role of specialization in supporting species coexistence in high-diversity ecosystems. Using a novel ordination-based method to quantify specialist and generalist feeding structures and diets we examined the relationship between morphology and diet in 120 wrasses and parrotfishes from the Great Barrier Reef. We find that wrasses, despite their morphological diversity, exhibit wea...
