Marginal compensated effects in discrete labor supply models

چکیده

This paper develops analytic results for marginal compensated effects in discrete labor supply models, including a Slutsky equation. The equation is aggregate the sense that it establishes relationship between of probability working and mean hours work terms corresponding uncompensated effects. differs somewhat from standard continuous models. Specifically, effect an increase wage rate decrease rate. To illustrate some qualitative properties we have used empirical model to compute numerical (Hicksian) (Marshallian) resulting changes.

Simplified marginal effects in discrete choice models

We show that with a simple normalization of explanatory variables, marginal effects in probit and logit models simplify dramatically, becoming a function of only the estimated constant term. Related simplifications hold for computation of asymptotic variances of these effects. D 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Accounting for Labor Demand Effects in Structural Labor Supply Models

Accounting for Labor Demand Effects in Structural Labor Supply Models When assessing the effects of policy reforms on the labor market, most studies only focus on labor supply. The interaction of supply and demand side is not explicitly modeled, which might lead to biased estimates of potential labor market outcomes. This paper proposes a straightforward method to remedy this shortcoming. We us...

Flexible Labor Supply Models

Flexible Labor Supply Models Discrete-choice models of labor supply have become very popular for ex ante evaluations of policy reforms as they easily account for non-convex budget sets. We test the constraints imposed in practice on these models and suggest a fully flexible model that significantly improves fit. JEL Classification: H31, J22

Sticky Wage Models and Labor Supply Constraints∗

In New Keynesian models with sticky wages, the quantity of labor is solely determined by the demand side. Unions with monopsony power set the wage above what it takes to make agents work. If wages are sticky, however, a change of circumstances may make the demand for labor higher than agents’ willingness to work. Because of the simplicity of log-linearization, the literature implicitly assumes ...

Different Modeling Strategies for Discrete Choice Models of Labor Supply: Estimates for Switzerland

In recent applications of discrete choice models of labor supply considerable attention has been devoted to strategies to increase the flexibility of models for a better fit to the data. However the functional form of preferences in these models remained restrictive. The question is therefore if we can gain something by allowing for more flexible preferences. This paper compares four different ...
