Marcasite at the Permian?Triassic Transition

چکیده
Abundant pyrite in black shales at the Permian-Triassic Boundary (PTB) from several localities around world has been regarded as evidence of oceanic anoxia during end-Permian mass extinction (EPME). However, a significant amount “pyrite” these rocks is not actually but marcasite, orthorhombic polymorph FeS2. Marcasite particularly sensitive to changes pH and fO2, which theoretically enables it be utilized proxy for geochemical marine environment. Moreover, its abundance PTB suggests that major occurred this time global ocean. In chapter, we present stable isotope trace element compositional data both marcasite pyrite, were identified stratigraphic interval representing EPME, along with bulk-rock chemostratigraphic Kockatea Shale, Perth Basin, Australia. We compare marcasite-pyrite intergrowth textures sedimentary sequences Meishan D (MD), Opal Creek (OC), Ubara (Ub), Shale (KS), represent shallow continental shelves ancient Tethys Ocean (KS, MD) abyssal plains Panthalassic (Ub, OC) end Permian. The textures, geochemistry, sulphur isotopic analyses samples favor synsedimentary early diagenetic origin sulfides, further supporting notion EPME was least partially caused by large-scale drop ocean PTB. A review other globe, including pre- post-Permian sections, indicates sedimentary-diagenetic may more abundant rock record than previously recognized, carries implications geochemistry environment through geologic time.

متن کاملClustering at the Phase Transition
Many problem ensembles exhibit a phase transition that is associated with a large peak in the average cost of solving the problem instances. However, this peak is not necessarily due to a lack of solutions: indeed the average number of solutions is typically exponentially large. Here, we study this situation within the context of the satissability transition in Random 3SAT. We nd that a signiic...
متن کاملSafflorite, (Co,Ni,Fe)As2, isomorphous with marcasite
Safflorite, a naturally occurring cobalt-nickel-iron diarsenide (Co,Ni,Fe)As(2), possesses the marcasite-type structure, with cations (M = Co + Ni + Fe) at site symmetry 2/m and As anions at m. The MAs(6) octa-hedra share two edges, forming chains parallel to c. The chemical formula for safflorite should be expressed as (Co,Ni,Fe)As(2), rather than the end-member format CoAs(2), as its structur...
متن کاملOxidation of Pyrite and Marcasite by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans Bacteria
This paper reports results of studies on the influence of the crystallographic mineral structure on the process of pyrite and marcasite leaching. Kinetic studies show that the crystallographic structure of minerals like FeS2 type does not influence the efficiency of the process.
متن کاملNormal stresses at the gelation transition.
A simple Rouse-type model, generalized to incorporate the effects of chemical cross-links, is used to obtain a theoretical prediction for the critical behavior of the normal-stress coefficients Psi(1) and Psi(2) in polymeric liquids when approaching the gelation transition from the sol side. While the exact calculation shows Psi(2) identical with 0, a typical result for these types of models, a...
