Mapping computational thinking mindsets between educational levels with cognitive network science

Abstract A significant aspect of computational thinking is as a way reasoning about the world in terms data. This mindset channels number-crunching toward an ambition to discover knowledge through logic, models and simulations. Here we show how cognitive science can be used reconstruct analyse structure mindsets (forma mentis Latin) complex networks. As case study, investigate networks tied key concepts provided by (i) 159 high school students enrolled curriculum (ii) 59 researchers systems Researchers’ reconstructed highlighted positive scientific modelling, semantically framing data simulations ways discovering nature. Students correctly identified different aspects logic but perceived ‘computation’ distressing, anxiety-eliciting task, framed with math jargon lacking links real-world discovery. Students’ around ‘data’, ‘model’ ‘simulations’ critically revealed no awareness numerical modelling for understanding world. Our findings provide evidence crippled students, who acquire mathematical skills that are not channelled discovery coding. unlinked ends up being distressing expertise relevant outcome.
