Mapping accreted stars in early-type galaxies across the mass–size plane

چکیده

ABSTRACT Galaxy mergers are instrumental in dictating the final mass, structure, stellar populations, and kinematics of galaxies. Cosmological galaxy simulations indicate that most massive galaxies at z = 0 dominated by high fractions ‘ex-situ’ stars, which formed first distinct independent galaxies, then subsequently merged into host galaxy. Using spatially resolved MUSE spectroscopy we quantify map ex-situ stars thirteen early-type We use full spectral fitting together with semi-analytic evolution models to isolate signatures galaxies’ light indicative populations. large field view find all display an increase fraction radius, more extended showing a rapid radial (reaching values between ?30 per cent 100 2 effective radii) compared less compact sources ?5 40 within same radius). These results line predictions from theory suggest should significantly radius fixed mass for

Homogeneity of early–type galaxies across clusters

We studied the homogeneity, across clusters, of the color of the red sequence (the intercept of the color–magnitude relation) of 158 clusters and groups detected in the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (EDR–SDSS) in the redshift range 0.06 < z < 0.34. We found a high degree of homogeneity: the color of the red sequence shows an intrinsic scatter of 0.02 mag across clusters, su...

The Sdss-ukidss Fundamental Plane of Early-type Galaxies

We derive the Fundamental Plane (FP) relation for a sample of 1430 early-type galaxies in the optical (r band) and the near-infrared (K band), by combining SDSS and UKIDSS data. With such a large, homogeneous dataset, we are able to assess the dependence of the FP on the waveband. Our analysis indicates that the FP of luminous early-type galaxies is essentially waveband independent, with its co...

The fundamental plane of isolated early-type galaxies

Here we present new measurements of effective radii, surface brightnesses and internal velocity dispersions for 23 isolated early-type galaxies. The photometric properties are derived from new multi-colour imaging of 10 galaxies, whereas the central kinematics for 7 galaxies are taken from forthcoming work by Hau & Forbes. These are supplemented with data from the literature. We reproduce the c...

Bulges on the Fundamental Plane of Early-Type Galaxies

In an ongoing effort to study the formation and evolution of galactic bulges we have investigated the position of 19 bulges of type S0-Sbc on the fundamental plane (FP). We find that bulges, both in B and K band, lie close to but slightly below the FP defined by ellipticals and S0s, i.e. are slightly brighter. There are hints that bulges of later morphological type are situated below the other ...

Mountains on Neutron Stars : Accreted vs . Non - Accreted

The aim of this paper is to compare the two cases of an isolated neutron star, with a non-accreted crust, and that of an accreting neutron star, with an accreted crust, and try to estimate which one of the two would make a better source of gravitational waves. In order to do this we must evaluate the maximum " mountain " that the crust can sustain in these two cases. We first do this using the ...
