چکیده

This paper introduces the CASINO (CAnopy backscatter estimation, Subsampling, and Inhibited Nonlinear Optimisation) algorithm for above-ground biomass (AGB) estimation in tropical forests using P-band (435 MHz) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The has been implemented a prototype processor European Space Agency's (ESA's) 7th Earth Explorer Mission BIOMASS, scheduled launch 2023. employs an interferometric ground cancellation technique to estimate canopy (CB) intensity. A power law model (PLM) is then used dependence of CB on AGB large number systematically distributed SAR data samples small calibration areas with known AGB. PLM parameters are estimated simultaneously within pre-defined intervals nonlinear minimisation cost function. performance assessed over six forest sites two continents: French Guiana, South America four Gabon, Africa, acquired during airborne ESA campaigns processed simulate BIOMASS acquisitions. Multiple tests only randomly selected > 100 t/ha conducted assess given limited reference At 2.25 ha scale single flight heading, root-mean-square difference (RMSD) ≤ 27% at least 50% all each test site as maps derived from laser scanning An improvement observed when headings combination. most consistent (lowest RMSD variation across different sets) interval average around 200–250 t/ha. challenging conditions < 200 topographic variations. comparison 142 1 plots situ measurements gives 20% (66 t/ha).

Above-ground biomass and structure of 260 African tropical forests

We report above-ground biomass (AGB), basal area, stem density and wood mass density estimates from 260 sample plots (mean size: 1.2 ha) in intact closed-canopy tropical forests across 12 African countries. Mean AGB is 395.7 Mg dry mass ha⁻¹ (95% CI: 14.3), substantially higher than Amazonian values, with the Congo Basin and contiguous forest region attaining AGB values (429 Mg ha⁻¹) similar to...

Above ground biomass and tree species richness estimation with airborne lidar in tropical Ghana forests

Estimates of forest aboveground biomass are fundamental for carbon monitoring and accounting; delivering information at very high spatial resolution is especially valuable for local management, conservation and selective logging purposes. In tropical areas, hosting large biomass and biodiversity resources which are often threatened by unsustainable anthropogenic pressures, frequent forest resou...

Assessment of Above-Ground Biomass of Borneo Forests through a New Data-Fusion Approach Combining Two Pan-Tropical Biomass Maps

This study investigates how two existing pan-tropical above-ground biomass (AGB) maps (Saatchi 2011, Baccini 2012) can be combined to derive forest ecosystem specific carbon estimates. Several data-fusion models which combine these AGB maps according to their local correlations with independent datasets such as the spectral bands of SPOT VEGETATION imagery are analyzed. Indeed these spectral ba...

Above Ground Biomass estimation from SAR vertical reflectivity profiles

First attempts for the estimation of above ground forest biomass (AGB) by means of SAR, have used allometric equations to calculate biomass from the estimated PolInSAR forest height. However, changes in forest density or structure bias the known allometric relations. Today, remote sensing systems like SAR are able to measure additional parameters like vertical forest structure [1] [2]. In this ...
