Manure for millet: Grain δ15N values as indicators of prehistoric cropping intensity of Panicum miliaceum and Setaria italica

چکیده
Broomcorn and foxtail millet are the only major domesticated plants indigenous to prehistoric Eurasia rely on C4photosynthetic pathway. Here we study impact of animal manure (AM) broomcorn (Panicum miliaceum) (Setaria italica), grown in Askov Long-Term Experiment, using unmanured soil dressed with phosphorus plus potassium (PK) as reference treatments. Animal had a marked effect yields δ15N values grains. For millets manured soil, average value was 5.8‰. When PK-treated soils, were 0.4‰ 0.2‰, respectively. also differed between grains from (-1.0‰), PK (0.7‰) (6.3‰) Thus, when compared offset due 7.3‰ for Setaria 5.3‰ two Panicum varieties. In accordance previous studies C3 crops, our suggests that charred recovered archaeological sites could provide robust indicator manuring intensity.

Phytoliths Analysis for the Discrimination of Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica) and Common Millet (Panicum miliaceum)
Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) and Common millet (Panicum miliaceum) are the oldest domesticated dry farming crops in Eurasia. Identifying these two millets in the archaeobotanical remains are still problematic, especially because the millet grains preserve only when charred. Phytoliths analysis provides a viable method for identifying this important crop. However, to date, the identification...

Evaluation of three hundred and sixty four proso millet germplasm accessions were done during rabi, 2008-2009 at Department of Millets, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genetics, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore to study genetic variability, diversity, correlation and path analysis of yield and its components. High variability observed for most of the characters indicated the scope o...
متن کاملGrain Yield and Quality of Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) in Response to Tribenuron-Methyl
Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is cultivated around the world for human and animal consumption. There is no suitable herbicide available for weed control in foxtail millet fields during the post-emergence stage. In this study, we investigated the effect and safety of the post-emergence herbicide tribenuron-methyl (TBM) on foxtail millet in terms of grain yield and quality using a split-plo...

Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) belongs to one of the first cultivated plants. Although the crop is traditionally grown, especially in Asia and from European countries through to Russia, nowadays it has become a new alternative crop and a new raw material for food production in many developed countries. Also changes of climatic conditions can support the growth of this drought-resistant pla...
