Managing soil acidity vs. soil Ca:Mg ratio: What is more important for crop productivity?

چکیده
Soil balancing (SB), or base cation saturation ratio (BCSR), is a soil management approach that strives to maintain specific calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) levels improve health, decrease pest problems, have better crops, increase crop yield. To achieve ideal of Ca Mg, BCSR practitioners apply gypsum (calcium sulfate) high-calcium lime (Hi-Cal lime) amendments, with the former increasing later both pH. We hypothesized positive benefits ascribed by are due pH, rather than levels, which occur after application. Thus, we conducted successive applications epsom (magnesium without Hi-Cal dolomitic lime, either lower Ca:Mg pH in an Ohio-based experiment over 6 yr evaluated yield responses corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean (Glycine max L.)–small grain rotation. Repeated significantly increased repeated decreased ratio. Crop was not affected for any year. However, study, yields were positively related increases conclude Mg did impact soybean but managing acidity remains fundamental tool yields.

Managing Soil Acidity
The minerals from which a soil is formed partly determine whether it is acid or alkaline. Soils formed from acidic rocks have a lower pH than those formed from basic rocks or alkaline parent material. Rainfall affects soil acidity development by leaching basic elements such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium from the soil profile, leaving the acidic elements: hydrogen, aluminum and ma...
متن کاملAlleviating Soil Acidity with Crop Residues
Soil acidity, which is characterized by mainly aluminum (Al) toxicity and often calcium (Ca) deficiency, is a serious constraint for crop production in many regions of the world. Soil acidity is traditionally corrected by applications of lime (CaCO3 or Ca(OH)2), which raise soil pH, precipitate Al and provide Ca. However, high rates of lime cannot be afforded because of its high cost relative t...
متن کاملSoil microbial C:N ratio is a robust indicator of soil productivity for paddy fields
Maintaining good soil productivity in rice paddies is important for global food security. Numerous methods have been developed to evaluate paddy soil productivity (PSP), most based on soil physiochemical properties and relatively few on biological indices. Here, we used a long-term dataset from experiments on paddy fields at eight county sites and a short-term dataset from a single field experi...
متن کاملManaging Soil pH and Crop Nutrients
91 The inherent complexity of crop production systems requires integrating many factors to ensure maximum crop yields with the least risk to the environment. Assessing presentand reserved-nutrient status of the soil, understanding its nutrient-release and nutrient-holding capacity, and knowing the plant and environmental factors that impact nutrient availability are necessary to guide fertiliza...

Soil pH, soil acidity, and their effects on plants The pH scale, ranging from 0 to 14, is used to indicate acidity and alkalinity. pH is a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions (symbol = H) in the water contained in the soil. A pH of 7.0 is neutral, values below 7 are acidic, and those above 7 are alkaline (basic). The lower the pH, the more acid the soil. Each unit pH drop indicates te...
