Manage early morning ADHD symptoms and functional impairment with treatments that are effective from awakening

چکیده
The early morning routine before school can be a particularly challenging time for children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Morning-dosed stimulants often fail to adequately address ADHD symptoms impaired functioning, due the delay in their onset of effect, which has significant impact on entire family. Clinicians should consider treatments that are effective from awakening, such as methylphenidate delayed release/extended release administered evening, transdermal system applied skin or long-acting non-stimulants atomoxetine guanfacine extended release, improve functioning during morning.

Sleep disturbances are correlated with decreased morning awakening salivary cortisol.
Morning and evening salivary cortisol levels were correlated with sleep parameters in 14 patients with primary insomnia and 15 healthy controls. Salivary cortisol was sampled immediately after awakening (T1), 15 min later (T2), and immediately before going to bed (T3) for 1 week at home. In parallel with this, subjects estimated parameters of sleep in a daily sleep log. Patients and controls we...
متن کاملDeveloping the Symptoms and Functional Impairment Rating Scale: A Multi-Dimensional ADHD Scale
Objective This research developed a practical, multi-dimensional attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) rating scale (i.e., the Symptoms and Functional Impairment Rating Scale, SFIRS) for Chinese children, aged 6-12 years, with ADHD. Methods The structural validity, criterion validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability of the scale were evaluated. Item screening was c...
متن کاملPredicting ADHD Symptoms in Adolescence from Early Childhood Temperament Traits.
Extreme levels of certain temperament traits can be early markers of different developmental pathways of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the long-term utility of using these traits as predictors of ADHD is not fully known. This study includes 64 male adolescents (M age = 13.5), who have been followed since birth as part of a longitudinal study. The primary aim was to t...
متن کاملThe cortisol awakening response and autonomic nervous system activity during nocturnal and early morning periods.
The current study focuses on autonomic nervous system activity during sleep as a physiological aspect of sleep quality, and investigated the associations between the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and autonomic activity during sleep and after awakening. Ambulatory electrocardiograms were obtained from 20 participants, who also provided saliva samples (at the time of awakening, and 30, 45, an...
متن کاملA Review of Factors that Promote Resilience in Youth with ADHD and ADHD Symptoms.
The vast majority of research on youth with ADHD has focused on risk factors and describing the types of impairment individuals with ADHD experience. However, functional outcomes associated with ADHD are heterogeneous, and although many youth with ADHD experience significant negative outcomes (e.g., school dropout), some are successful in multiple domains of functioning (e.g., pursue and gradua...
