Manabe’s Radiative–Convective Equilibrium

چکیده
Abstract Syukoro (Suki) Manabe’s Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded largely for his early work on one-dimensional models of “radiative–convective equilibrium” (RCE), which produced the first credible estimates Earth’s climate sensitivity. This article reviews that and tries to identify those aspects make it so distinctive. We argue model RCE contained three crucial ingredients. These are (i) a tight convective coupling surface troposphere, (ii) an assumption fixed relative humidity rather than absolute humidity, (iii) sufficiently realistic representation greenhouse gas radiative transfer. Previous studies had separately identified these key ingredients, but none properly combined them. then discuss each ingredients turn, highlighting how subsequent research intervening decades has only cemented their importance understanding global change. close by reflecting elegance approach its lasting value.

The sensitivity of convective aggregation to diabatic processes in idealized radiativeconvective equilibrium simulations
Idealized explicit convection simulations of the Met Office Unified Model exhibit spontaneous selfaggregation in radiative-convective equilibrium, as seen in other models in previous studies. This selfaggregation is linked to feedbacks between radiation, surface fluxes, and convection, and the organization is intimately related to the evolution of the column water vapor field. Analysis of the b...
متن کاملInfluence of entrainment on the thermal stratification in simulations of radiativeconvective equilibrium
[1] Convective available potential energy (CAPE) is shown to increase rapidly with warming in simulations of radiativeconvective equilibrium over a wide range of surface temperatures. The increase in CAPE implies a systematic deviation of the thermal stratification from moist adiabatic that is non-negligible at high temperatures. However, cloud buoyancy remains much smaller than what CAPE would...
متن کاملEquilibrium Trust Equilibrium Trust *
We build a simple model of trust as an equilibrium phenomenon, departing from standard “selfish” preferences in a minimal way. Agents who are on the receiving end of an offer to transact can choose whether to cheat and take away the entire surplus, taking into account a “cost of cheating.” The latter has an idiosyncratic component (an agent’s type), and a socially determined one. The smaller th...
متن کاملFuzzy Vector Equilibrium Problem
In the present paper, we introduce and study a fuzzy vector equilibrium problem and prove some existence results with and without convexity assumptions by using some particular forms of results of textit{Kim} and textit{Lee} [W.K. Kim and K.H. Lee, Generalized fuzzy games and fuzzy equilibria, Fuzzy Sets and Systems, 122 (2001), 293-301] and textit{Tarafdar} [E. Tarafdar, Fixed point theorems i...
متن کاملColloidal gels: equilibrium and non-equilibrium routes
We attempt a classification of different colloidal gels based on colloidcolloid interactions. We discriminate primarily between non-equilibrium and equilibrium routes to gelation, the former case being slaved to thermodynamic phase separation while the latter is individuated in the framework of competing interactions and of patchy colloids. Emphasis is put on recent numerical simulations of col...
