Male/Female Trade-Off in Hermaphroditic Y-Chromosome Deletion Mutants of the Dioecious Plant <i>Silene latifolia</i>

چکیده

The evolution of dioecy from hermaphroditism allows for avoidance self-pollination, and its evolutionary background has been investigated both experimentally theoretically since it was first proposed by Darwin. To reproduce this evolution, we screened hermaphroditic mutants Silene latifolia using heavy-ion beam or γ-ray irradiation characterized the phenotypes their floral organs. Our scatterplots indicate severe deviations trade-off relationships between pollen ovule numbers seed germinated in mutant S. latifolia. These presumably led to promotion ancestral state infer likely flower phenotypic characteristics plant before evolving dioecy, flowers viscosa, a naturally related were also characterized. viscosa exhibits spatial separation stamens pistils within (reverse herkogamy) temporal stamen pistil maturation (dichogamy), raising question whether latifolia, which is thought be state, would possess these functions. We show that two dioecious exhibit signs protogyny dichogamy) approach herkogamy, as constantly longer than stamens. findings illustrate self-pollination mechanism balance investments into male female

Evidence for Degeneration of the Y Chromosome in the Dioecious Plant Silene latifolia

The human Y--probably because of its nonrecombining nature--has lost 97% of its genes since X and Y chromosomes started to diverge [1, 2]. There are clear signs of degeneration in the Drosophila miranda neoY chromosome (an autosome fused to the Y chromosome), with neoY genes showing faster protein evolution [3-6], accumulation of unpreferred codons [6], more insertions of transposable elements ...

Narrowing Down the Mapping of Plant Sex-Determination Regions Using New Y-Chromosome-Specific Markers and Heavy-Ion Beam Irradiation-Induced Y-Deletion Mutants in Silene latifolia

Silene latifolia is a well-studied model system for plant XY sex determination. Three maleness factors are thought to function on the Y chromosome, gynoecium suppression factor (GSF), stamen-promoting factor (SPF), and male fertility factor (MFF), and their deletions result in hermaphrodites, anther defects, and pollen defects, respectively. Although a framework map of the Y chromosome exists, ...

Molecular Study of Partial Deletions of AZFc Region of the Y Chromosome in Infertile Men

Background & Aims: The most significant cause of infertility in men is the genetic deletion in the azoospermia factor (AZF) region that is caused by the process of intra- and inter-chromosomal homologous recombination in amplicons. Homologous recombination could also result in partial deletions in AZF region. The aim of this research was to determine the association between the partial AZFc del...

Chromosome Y Centromere Array Deletion Leads to Impaired Centromere Function

The centromere is an essential chromosomal structure that is required for the faithful distribution of replicated chromosomes to daughter cells. Defects in the centromere can compromise the stability of chromosomes resulting in segregation errors. We have characterised the centromeric structure of the spontaneous mutant mouse strain, BALB/cWt, which exhibits a high rate of Y chromosome instabil...
