Male genital lobe morphology affects the chance to copulate in Drosophila pachea

چکیده

Abstract Introduction Male genitalia are thought to ensure transfer of sperm through direct physical contact with female during copulation. However, little attention has been given their pre-copulatory role respect sexual selection and conflict. Males the fruitfly Drosophila pachea have a pair asymmetric external genital lobes, which primary structures stabilize copulatory complex male genitalia. We wondered if lobes in D. may before or at onset copulation, contacts made. Results tested this hypothesis stock where males variable lobe lengths. In 92 mate competition trials single two males, females preferentially engaged into first copulation that had longer left displayed increased courtship vigor. 53 additional both having partially amputated different lengths, we observed weaker non-significant effect length on success. Courtship durations significantly age when courted simultaneously, compared only one courting male. addition, did not affect once was established. Conclusion Left affects chance engage The morphology trait reproductive success by mediating signals facilitating establishment

Evolutionary Response to Sexual Selection in Male Genital Morphology

Male genital morphology is characterized by two striking and general patterns of morphological variation: rapid evolutionary divergence in shape and complexity, and relatively low scaling relationships with body size. These patterns of variation have been ascribed to the action of sexual selection. Among species, monogamous taxa tend to have relatively less complex male genital morphology than ...

The genetic basis of rapidly evolving male genital morphology in Drosophila.

The external genitalia are some of the most rapidly evolving morphological structures in insects. The posterior lobe of the male genital arch shows striking differences in both size and shape among closely related species of the Drosophila melanogaster species subgroup. Here, we dissect the genetic basis of posterior lobe morphology between D. mauritiana and D. sechellia, two island endemic spe...

Drosophila Porin/VDAC Affects Mitochondrial Morphology

Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) has been suggested to be a mediator of mitochondrial-dependent cell death induced by Ca(2+) overload, oxidative stress and Bax-Bid activation. To confirm this hypothesis in vivo, we generated and characterized Drosophila VDAC (porin) mutants and found that Porin is not required for mitochondrial apoptosis, which is consistent with the previous mouse studie...

Coevolution of Male and Female Genital Morphology in Waterfowl

Most birds have simple genitalia; males lack external genitalia and females have simple vaginas. However, male waterfowl have a phallus whose length (1.5->40 cm) and morphological elaborations vary among species and are positively correlated with the frequency of forced extra-pair copulations among waterfowl species. Here we report morphological complexity in female genital morphology in waterf...

Maternal effect influencing male genital disc development in Drosophila melanogaster.

HE development of the testes and associated organs in Drosophiln melanoT g m t m has been studied by many investigators (STERN 1940. 1941a. b; STERN and HADORS 1939; URSPRUNC 1963). A review of the literature has been given by RODI:.NSTIXN (1950). During the larval and early pupal stages. the testes are ellipsoidal in form. Following attachment of the testes to the developing seminal vesicles. ...
