Malaria treatment failure after Artemisinin-based combination therapy: A case series of children managed at a private tertiary hospital in southwest Nigeria

Malaria treatment failure is the inability to clear parasitaemia after antimalarial drug administration. There are reports of with artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) in Nigeria but few reported among children. We report three paediatric cases ACT admitted at a private tertiary hospital early 2022. All were ‘under-fives’ for open-heart surgery, major flame burns, and cerebral malaria respectively. They had symptomatic Plasmodium falciparum infection one mixed P. vivax infections. Cases 1 2 initially given oral artemether-lumefantrine while case 3 received intravenous artesunate. Despite appropriate compliance, all still fever heavy parasitaemia. subsequently quinine, improvement within first 24 hours therapy, no longer fourth week follow-up. Although resistance was not established, poor quality may have contributed failure. need pharmacovigilance anti-malarial Nigeria.

 L'échec est l'incapacité éliminer la parasitémie l'administration d'un médicament antipaludique. Il y des rapports d'échec avec thérapie combinée d'artémisinine au Nigeria, mais peu ont été signalés chez les enfants. Nous rapportons trois pédiatriques admis début Tous étaient « moins cinq ans » pour chirurgie cœur ouvert, brûlures graves par flamme et cérébral, respectivement. Ils avaient symptomatique avait infections mixtes vivax. Les initialement reçu l'artéméther-luméfantrine voie orale tandis que le l'artésunate intraveineuse. Malgré bonne observance médicaments antipaludiques, tous encore fièvre forte parasitémie. ensuite quinine intraveineuse, amélioration premières heures traitement, n'avaient plus quatrième semaine suivi. Bien résistance l'ACT n'ait pas établie, mauvaise qualité peut avoir contribué l'échec traitement. besoin antipaludéens
