Dynamical parallax of σ Ori AB : mass , distance and age
The massive OB-type binary σ Ori AB is in the centre of the very young σ Orionis cluster. I have computed the most probable distances and masses of the binary for several ages using a dynamical parallax-like method. It incorporates the BV RIH-band apparent magnitudes of both components, precise orbital parameters, interstellar extinction and a widely used grid of stellar models from the literat...
متن کاملThe distance to the Pleiades Main sequence fitting in the near infrared
Hipparcos parallax measurements of stars in the Pleiades notoriously result in a cluster distance of 118 pc, which is approximately 10% shorter than the 'classical' result obtained from earlier main sequence (MS) fitting studies. In an earlier paper we developed a purely empirical MS-fitting method in an attempt to address this problem. This work produced conflicting results for the Pleiades be...
متن کاملThe Distance to Ngc 6397 by M-subdwarf Main-sequence Fitting
Recent years have seen a substantial improvement both in photometry of low-luminosity stars in globular clusters and in modeling the stellar atmospheres of late-type dwarfs. We build on these observational and theoretical advances in undertaking the Ðrst determination of the distance to a globular cluster by main-sequence Ðtting using stars on the lower main sequence. The calibrating stars are ...
متن کاملGlobular Cluster Ages from Main Sequence Fitting and Detached, Eclipsing Binaries: The Case of 47 Tuc
Age constraints are most often placed on globular clusters by comparing their CMDs with theoretical isochrones. The recent discoveries of detached, eclipsing binaries in such systems by the Cluster AgeS Experiment (CASE) provide new insights into their ages and, at the same time, much needed tests of stellar evolution models. We describe efforts to model the properties of the detached, eclipsin...
متن کاملRotation and accretion of very low mass objects in the σ Ori cluster ⋆
We report on two photometric monitoring campaigns of Very Low Mass (VLM) objects in the young open cluster around σ Orionis. Our targets were pre-selected with multi-filter photometry in a field of 0.36 sqdeg. For 23 of these objects, spanning a mass range from 0.03 to 0.7M⊙, we detect periodic variability. Of these, 16 exhibit low-level variability, with amplitudes of less than 0.2 mag in the ...
