Magnitude sound symbolism influences vowel production

چکیده
Segmental properties of speech can convey sound symbolic meaning. This study presents two novel sound-meaning mappings using a choice reaction time paradigm in which participants have to select quickly one the vocal response alternatives based on predefined categories perceptual magnitude. The first showed that short distance between perceived objects facilitates initiation vowel [i] production, while long production [u] and [æ]. Correspondingly, second study, responses produced with [e] were initiated faster when stimuli required vocalizations, [u], [æ] [y] vocalizations. Hence, similar observed concerning concepts spatial temporal length. suggests different sound-magnitude effects be generalized common processing conceptual A magnitude seems implicitly systematically associated an articulatory specific vowel. also addition openness backness, roundness associate particular vowels large magnitudes.

Early sound symbolism for vowel sounds
Children and adults consistently match some words (e.g., kiki) to jagged shapes and other words (e.g., bouba) to rounded shapes, providing evidence for non-arbitrary sound-shape mapping. In this study, we investigated the influence of vowels on sound-shape matching in toddlers, using four contrasting pairs of nonsense words differing in vowel sound (/i/ as in feet vs. /o/ as in boat) and four r...
متن کاملSound Symbolism
Sound symbolism is the term for a hypothesized systematic relationship between sound and meaning (Hinton, Nichols, & Ohala 1994). The idea that there might be a non-arbitrary relationship between the physical aspect of a speech signal and its meaning is quite an old idea, dating back at least to the time of Plato who, in his work Cratylus, had Socrates debating with two pupils the issue of whet...
متن کاملSynthesized size-sound sound-symbolism
Studies of sound symbolism have shown that people can associate sound and meaning in consistent ways when presented with maximally contrastive stimulus pairs of nonwords such as bouba/kiki (rounded/sharp) or mil/mal (small/big). Recent work has shown the effect extends to antonymic words from natural languages and has proposed a role for shared cross-modal correspondences in biasing formto-mean...
متن کاملSouth Siberian Sound Symbolism
South Siberian Turkic languages are rich in sound symbolic subsystems, both in their lexica and in the productive morphophonology, but these systems remain to be adequately documented. This paper presents new field data on sound symbolism in two South Siberian Turkic languages: Tofa(lar) and Tuvan (including the unwritten Tsengel and Hovd dialects spoken in Mongolia). Sound symbolic word format...
متن کاملSound Symbolism in Basic Vocabulary
The relationship between meanings of words and their sound shapes is to a large extent arbitrary, but it is well known that languages exhibit sound symbolism effects violating arbitrariness. Evidence for sound symbolism is typically anecdotal, however. Here we present a systematic approach. Using a selection of basic vocabulary in nearly one half of the world’s languages we find commonalities a...
