Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling: Implications of Non-Equilibrium Conditions

چکیده
The response times of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system are, on average, greater than autocorrelation timescales solar wind forcing. This means that is rarely, if ever, in equilibrium. Departures from equilibrium are a key component Expanding-Contracting Polar Cap (ECPC) model convection excitation both magnetosphere and ionosphere, driven by Dungey reconnection cycle opening re-closing magnetospheric field lines. Averaging over sufficiently long reduces data to equivalent steady-state conditions, which hides physical mechanisms involved allows us map electric fields interplanetary space ionosphere–but this not valid, either physically or generally, because magnetic induction effects. Only for transient phenomena short do associated with non-equilibrium fully manifest themselves. Nevertheless, ever-changing conditions Earth’s dipole tilt, eccentricity rotation, always tending towards perpetually-evolving configuration there important implications events understanding general behavior its We here discuss one example: as consequence importance departures inherent ECPC model, dynamic pressure P SW influences magnetosphere-ionosphere generation open lines dayside subsolar magnetopause. demonstrate effect statistical survey observations show it predicted that, through it, has an influence flux transport system.

Inductive magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling
Inductive coupling of a global magnetospheric model to a global ionospheric–thermospheric model is described. Existing schemes based on electrostatic coupling are valid for magnetospheric variability occurring on time scales of order 100 s or longer. The formulation developed here extends the validity of the coupling model to time scales of order 10 s, while retaining the physics of quasi-stati...
متن کاملImplications of Jovian X-ray emission for magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling
[1] The first observations of Jupiter made by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory revealed a powerful X-ray aurora located in the polar caps. The X-ray emission exhibited a 40-min periodicity. Such 40-min periodicities have previously been seen in energetic particle fluxes and in Jovian radio emission. This paper develops scenarios in which the X-ray emission is produced by energetic heavy ion precip...
متن کاملMagnetosphere-ionosphere coupling currents in Jupiter’s middle magnetosphere: effect of magnetosphere-ionosphere decoupling by field-aligned auroral voltages
We consider the effect of field-aligned voltages on the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling current system associated with the breakdown of rigid corotation of equatorial plasma in Jupiter’s middle magnetosphere. Previous analyses have assumed perfect mapping of the electric field and flow along equipotential field lines between the equatorial plane and the ionosphere, whereas it has been shown t...
متن کاملUse of Euler potentials for describing magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling
[1] We present a general formulation of the basic equations of large-scale magnetosphereionosphere coupling in terms of Euler potentials and describe a specific numerical implementation of this formulation in the context of the Rice Convection Model (RCM). When written in terms of Euler potentials, both the Vasyliunas magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling equation and the expression for bounce-aver...
