Magnetic ionization fronts II: Jump conditions for oblique magnetization
We present the jump conditions for ionization fronts with oblique magnetic fields. The standard nomenclature of Rand D-type fronts can still be applied, but in the case of oblique magnetization there are fronts of each type about each of the fastand slow-mode speeds. As an ionization front slows, it will drive first a fastand then a slowmode shock into the surrounding medium. Even for rather we...
متن کاملMagnetic ionization fronts I. Parallel magnetic fields
We solve the continuity equations across an ionization front. By including a plane parallel magnetic field we find significant differences in the allowed velocities of the Rand D-type solutions between the magnetized and non-magnetized cases. These results may have implications for the study of ionization bounded diffuse sources where a moderate or strong magnetic field is expected.
متن کاملMagnetohydrodynamic Jump Conditions for Oblique Relativistic Shocks with Gyrotropic Pressure
Shock jump conditions, i.e., the specification of the downstream parameters of the gas in terms of the upstream parameters, are obtained for steady-state, plane shocks with oblique magnetic fields and arbitrary flow speeds. This is done by combining the continuity of particle number flux and the electromagnetic boundary conditions at the shock with the magnetohydrodynamic conservation laws deri...
متن کاملRelativistic Ionization Fronts
We derive the equations for the propagation of relativistic ionization fronts (I-fronts) in both static and moving gases, including the cosmologically-expanding intergalactic medium (IGM). We focus on the supersonic R-type phase that occurs right after a source turns on, and we compare the nonrelativistic and relativistic solutions for several important cases. Relativistic corrections can be si...
متن کاملRelativistic runaway ionization fronts.
We investigate the first example of self-consistent impact ionization fronts propagating at relativistic speeds and involving interacting, high-energy electrons. These fronts, which we name relativistic runaway ionization fronts, show remarkable features such as a bulk speed within less than one percent of the speed of light and the stochastic selection of high-energy electrons for further acce...
