Magnetic fields and rotation of spiral galaxies
We present a simplified model in which we suggest that two important galactic problems -the magnetic field configuration at large scales and the flat rotation curvemay be simultaneously explained. A highly convective disc produces a high turbulent magnetic diffusion in the vertical direction, stablishing a merging of extragalactic and galactic magnetic fields. The outer disc may then adquire a ...
متن کاملMoss: Magnetic fields in spiral galaxies
The first hints that our galaxy, the Milky Way, might host a large-scale magnetic field came in the late 1940s, from studies of the polarization of starlight. However, optical polarization is a relatively blunt tool and it was only in the late 1950s that radio synchroton observations began to indicate the presence of large-scale fields (e.g. Gardner and Davies 1966). By the early 1980s observat...
متن کاملMaximal halos in high-luminosity spiral galaxies
We test the halo dominated mass model, recently proposed for high-luminosity galaxies, against the rotation velocity data of a large sample of L ∼ L∗ spirals. We find that this model does not reproduce the general kinematic properties required. The alternative disc dominated model, on the contrary, easily fits the data.
متن کاملMolecular cloud formation and magnetic fields in spiral galaxies
We present ongoing hydrodynamic and MHD simulations of molecular cloud formation in spiral galaxies. The hydrodynamic results show the formation of molecular gas clouds where spiral shocks compress atomic gas to high densities. The spiral shocks also produce structure in the spiral arms, provided the gas is cold (< 1000 K). When both hot and cold components of the ISM are modeled, this structur...
متن کاملMagnetic Fields and Star Formation in Spiral Galaxies
The main observational results from radio continuum and polarization observations about the magnetic field strength and large-scale pattern for face-on and edge-on spiral galaxies are summarized and compared within our sample of galaxies of different morphological types, inclinations, and star formation rates (SFR). We found that galaxies with low SFR have higher thermal fractions/ smaller sync...
