Magnetic Confinement of an Ultracold Neutral Plasma

نویسندگان

چکیده

We demonstrate magnetic confinement of an ultracold neutral plasma (UCNP) created at the null a biconic cusp, or quadrupole field. Initially, UCNP expands due to electron thermal pressure. As encounters stronger fields, expansion slows and density distribution molds electrons are strongly magnetized over most plasma, while ion magnetization is only significant boundaries. Observations suggest that ions predominantly trapped by mirroring ambipolar electric respectively. Confinement times approach 0.5 ms, unmagnetized plasmas dissipate on timescale few tens microseconds.Received 10 November 2020Revised 5 January 2021Accepted 22 2021DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.126.085002© 2021 American Physical SocietyPhysics Subject Headings (PhySH)Physical SystemsLow-temperature plasmaMagnetic mirrors & trapsMagnetized plasmaStrongly-coupled plasmasTechniquesFluorescence spectroscopyPlasma PhysicsAtomic, Molecular Optical

Creation of an Ultracold Neutral Plasma

We report the creation of an ultracold neutral plasma by photoionization of laser-cooled xenon atoms. The charge carrier density is as high as 2 3 109 cm23, and the temperatures of electrons and ions are as low as 100 mK and 10 mK, respectively. Plasma behavior is evident in the trapping of electrons by the positive ion cloud when the Debye screening length becomes smaller than the size of the ...

Plasma oscillations and expansion of an ultracold neutral plasma

We report the observation of plasma oscillations in an ultracold neutral plasma. With this collective mode we probe the electron density distribution and study the expansion of the plasma as a function of time. For classical plasma conditions, i.e., weak Coulomb coupling, the expansion is dominated by the pressure of the electron gas and is described by a hydrodynamic model. Discrepancies betwe...

Simulation of the expansion of an ultracold neutral plasma.

We report the results of simulations that explain many properties of ultracold neutral plasmas. We find that three-body recombination is important at very low temperatures since it is a heating mechanism for the electron gas and it preferentially removes the slow ions from the plasma. We also find that collisions between cold electrons and Rydberg atoms are an important source of electron heati...

Formation of Rydberg atoms in an expanding ultracold neutral plasma.

We study the formation of Rydberg atoms in expanding plasmas at temperatures of 1-1000 K and densities from 10(5)-10(10) cm(-3). Up to 20% of the initially free charges recombine in about 100 micros, and the binding energy of the Rydberg atoms approximately equals the increase in the kinetic energy of the remaining free electrons. Three-body recombination is expected to dominate in this regime,...

Ion Temperature Evolution in an Ultracold Neutral Plasma

We study the long-time evolution of the ion temperature in an expanding ultracold neutral plasma using spatially resolved, laser-induced-fluorescence spectroscopy. Adiabatic cooling reduces the ion temperature by an order of magnitude during the plasma expansion, to temperatures as low as 0.2K. Cooling is limited by heat exchange between ions and the much hotter electrons. We also present evide...
