Magma Chamber Detected Beneath an Arc Volcano With Full‐Waveform Inversion of Active‐Source Seismic Data

چکیده

Arc volcanoes are underlain by complex systems of molten-rock reservoirs ranging from melt-poor mush zones to melt-rich magma chambers. Petrological and satellite data indicate that eruptible chambers form in the topmost few kilometres crust. However, very have ever been definitively located, suggesting most too short-lived or small be imaged, which has direct implications for hazard assessment modeling differentiation. Here we use a high-resolution technology based on inverting full seismic waveforms image small, high-melt-fraction chamber was not detected with standard tomography. Magma chamber behavior beneath a volcanic edifice

[1] The construction of a large volcanic edifice at Earth’s surface generates stresses in the upper crust whose magnitude is comparable to those of tectonic stresses and overpressures within a magma chamber. We study how this affects eruption behavior. Analytical calculations are carried out in two dimensions for a cylindrical reservoir with an internal overpressure in an elastic half-space wit...

Forecasting magma-chamber rupture at Santorini volcano, Greece

How much magma needs to be added to a shallow magma chamber to cause rupture, dyke injection, and a potential eruption? Models that yield reliable answers to this question are needed in order to facilitate eruption forecasting. Development of a long-lived shallow magma chamber requires periodic influx of magmas from a parental body at depth. This redistribution process does not necessarily caus...

Seismic anisotropy beneath Ruapehu volcano: a possible eruption forecasting tool.

The orientation of crustal seismic anisotropy changed at least twice by up to 80 degrees because of volcanic eruptions at Ruapehu Volcano, New Zealand. These changes provide the basis for a new monitoring technique and possibly for future midterm eruption forecasting at volcanoes. The fast anisotropic direction was measured during three seismometer deployments in 1994, 1998, and 2002, providing...

The region of Axial Volcano, Juan de Fuca Ridge region provides an excellent opportunity to study the interplay between active "hot spot" and "mid-ocean ridge" magmatic systems. Important questions include how the two magma systems are fed; their magma and heat budgets; the degree of inte...

Mushy magma beneath Yellowstone

[1] A recent prospective on the Yellowstone Caldera discounts its explosive potential based on inferences from tomographic studies which suggests a high degree of crystallization of the underlying magma body. In this study, we show that many of the first teleseismic P-wave arrivals observed at seismic stations on the edge of the caldera did not travel through the magma body but have taken longe...
