Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination in Kerala: A Success Story

National Filaria Control Programme has been running in the country since year 1955 with strategy of parasite detection, treatment and vector control mainly urban areas. In 1997, fiftieth World Health Assembly Resolution listed Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) for elimination by 2020 which now aligned Sustainable Development Goal to be achieved 2030. India also started its campaign eliminate LF 2004. The main programme is Annual Mass Drug Administration (MDA) progressively reduce ultimately interrupt transmission. other pillar morbidity management disability prevention. Kerala state 11 endemic districts out a total 14 districts. average population coverage during MDA was reported more than 90% from 2004 2013, however, drug compliance independent assessment 40%-60% improved subsequent years due multipronged approach. reason low consumption fear side effects same resolved through massive IEC activities highlighting benefits compared effects, are mostly self-limiting. innovative strategic approach extending period 3 days weeks undertaken ensure that all target covered. results have encouraging as above 65% many validated having threshold successfully clearing transmission survey (TAS).
