Lying behaviour of lactating dairy cows in a cow-calf contact freestall system

چکیده
Conventional dairy farming practices usually involve early separation of calves from their dams. Cow-calf contact (CCC) systems may offer an alternative rearing solution that allows for the expression natural behaviours, such as suckling and bonding. However, literature exploring effects CCC on lying behaviours lactating cows is limited. Thus, aims this study were to assess: (1) with without access a area, (2) freestall use patterns area over 14-week period. pairs (Swedish Holstein: n = 15; Swedish Red: 25) assigned one two treatments after calving: dam-calf (full contact; FC, 19), where housed in same facility dams, or shortly parturition (no NC, 18). The contained stalls concentrate feeders which only FC had to. Daily time – well duration frequency bouts was collected automatically using leg-mounted tri-axial accelerometers. Video recordings also used perform scan sampling cow calf location at 10-minute intervals 24-hour period each week. Behavioural data during 14 weeks, starting when all cow-calf entered experimental pen continuing until separation. Access full did not affect daily nor bouts. Overall, mean increased stage lactation. Lying bout affected by interaction between lactation parity, decreasing progressed, but primiparous post-peak Average cows, multiparous cows. Moreover, there interactive effect treatment parity duration, performing longer than spent 77.3(28.4)% (mean(SD)) total within across weeks. These results combined indicate behaviour system likely influenced factors other CCC. Furthermore, maintained individual stall throughout investigated study.

متن کاملThe effect of temporary deprivation of lying and feeding on the behaviour and production of lactating dairy cows.
Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of depriving dairy cows of the ability to feed and lie down for short periods, on behaviour and production. In experiment 1, cows were deprived by confining them in pairs in a pen for 2 or 4 h, and they more frequently exhibited behaviour likely to suggest discomfort - leg stamping, repositioning themselves, shifting their weight between leg...

Automated measurement of lying behavior for monitoring the comfort and welfare of lactating dairy cows
Behavioral monitoring may be useful to assess the welfare, state of health and comfort of farm animals. Lying behavior is often used as an indication of well-being in cattle and for evaluating the stall quality. The use of electronic data loggers to automate behavioral recording has become increasingly common. We tested the use of the Pedometer Plus tag (S.A.E. Afikim, Israel) for measuring the...
متن کاملEffect of dietary phosphorus on performance of lactating dairy cows: milk production and cow health.
The objective of this study was to measure cow response to feeding of two dietary concentrations of P, one of which was close to recent National Research Council requirements, and the other of which was well in excess of the requirement. Diets containing 0.37 or 0.57% P (dry basis) were fed to Holstein cows for the first 165 d of lactation, and occasionally longer until cows were confirmed preg...
